Debt Validation is a when an individual or business demands that a creditor substantiates that (i) the debt is owed by him/her/it, (ii) accounting of the debt amount, and (iii) the chain of custody if the creditor is not the original creditor.
Ex: Mary is the ex-wife of John, and she received a letter from American Express for an unpaid credit card. Mary has the right to request a validation of debt to determine whether she is legally responsible for the credit card. If the credit card was opened after Mary and John’s divorce, then Mary is not legally responsible for the credit card.
