Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (“FDCPA”) is a law imposed by the Federal Government that outlines the permissible conducts of debt collection agencies. For example, a debt collection agency cannot contact a debtor’s friends and family and inform them of debtor’s debt. Any debt collection agency that violates the FDCPA is subject to civil damages (i.e., up to $1,000). The government agency enforcing the FDCPA is the Federal Trade Commission.
